Chuck Hanes is a self-taught potter and he has been potting for about seven years. He has been a fulltime potter for the last two years. Chuck has always had a special interest and appreciation for Native American history and culture. The Native American story of struggle and survival in times of conflict, and even more, their beliefs and spirituality have long inspired him.
Chuck is also a fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman. It is with this sense of awe of the beauty in nature, Native American cultural heritage, and an appreciation for survival skills, that has lead him to pottery. His goal is to reflect these inspirations and earthly connection through his works and use of earth-tone colorations.
His convictions are also expressed in his choice for the Misty Mountain logo, (a sunrise over the mountains). The Misty Mountain logo contains the three elements that make pottery [earth (the mountain), fire (the sun), and water (the unseen mist in the air)]; but more importantly he feels there is a higher power at work through him. “I am merely a tool. I want to give him the honor and praise he deserves. I feel that it is near impossible to look at a mountainous sunrise and not feel a closeness to our creator, a sense of thanksgiving for all our blessings, and a renewed hope and joy for all the new day may hold”. |
