HORSEHAIR POTTERY
Most agree Horsehair Pottery takes it’s origin from the southwestern Native Americans.
I use a Raku clay to withstand the thermal shock of going from a hot kiln to open air. The piece is thrown with a smooth finish and further smoothed through burnishing and hand rubbing. After being bisque fired the piece is fired for a second time in a raku kiln.
The squiggly designs unique to Horsehair Pottery are formed when hair is allowed to carbonize (burn) into the hot piece taken from the kiln. After cooling the piece is cleaned and given multiple coats of wax to protect and add luster. This processis somewhat involved; however the efforts are rewarded through the individual uniqueness of each piece.
